Draconus is an arcade platformer where the player gains control of Frognum - a beast similar to a serpent or a dragon. His mission is to destroy the Tyrant Beast, an evil ruler of the dark and dangerous world in which Frognum lives. The main weapon in the game is fire breath, but on his quest Frognum will find many magical artifacts and, thanks to those, gain new powers. 

The gameplay is simple. The player just has to explore different screens, incinerate opponents and use artifacts (for example Morph Helix that transforms Frognum into a sea monster, which allows him to swim and fight underwater).

Review:

It is a dark time in this subterranean world of sorcery and mystical creatures, a world that has fallen under the supremacy of the villainous Tyrant Beast. Beasts run amok, fear is in the air and danger lurks behind every corner. 

Draconus puts the player in control of Frognum, an agile, fire-breathing serpent creature on a mission to overthrow the Tyrant Beast and restore order to his world. Frognum's quest will lead him to discover a multitude of magical artefacts, amongst which is the Morph Helix, which on contact with a morph slab will transmogrify Frognum into the amphibious Draconewt. 

The release of Draconus was met with much enthusiasm from C64 fans due to its graphical splendour, depth and atmospheric soundtrack all for the Zeppelin price tag of £2.99. Gamers would expect to pay full price for such a high-quality creation at the time, this game stood way above the multitude of other budget titles available. The controls were easy to pick up and the desire to explore kept the gamer entertained for hours. A memorable feature was Frognum's death sequence, which saw him literally split in two at the waist and his torso fall to the ground with a resounding pop. 

Completion of the game took a great deal of logical thinking and fast reflexes but was rewarding to see the game's last boss (the Tyrant Beast itself) and impressive end sequence. Much progress was dependent on the abilities of the Draconewt and the power-ups that had to be to be found along the way, fun but too linear at times. As arcade adventures go, Draconus was a superb title. By no means the best, but it had a long way to go to surpass the Sacred Armour of Antiriad.
